Design – we aim to make our buildings sustainable and environmentally friendly. We can only apply this as far as our clients wish but we will encourage them to do their utmost by stressing the wider benefits of sustainable design and the positive effect it can have on running costs, longevity, maintenance and health.  In particular, we aim to:

Enhance health and well-being – we will work to look after the mental and physical health of all people who use or live in our buildings through the use of:

  • Natural daylight and ventilation
  • Open space
  • Tree planting and natural shade
  • Cycle storage
  • Commuting alternatives
  • Use of considerate contractors

Increase building longevity and flexibility – we will design buildings that have a reasonable expectation of longevity by being simple to run, low-maintenance and adaptable to future needs and demands. Longevity can also be achieved by making buildings attractive to look at, and enjoyable to live in and use and appropriate to their surroundings. We will seek achieve this through careful manipulation of:

  • Efficient planning
  • Low-maintenance and durable materials
  • Form, space and light
  • Low-tech balancing mechanism systems
  • Attractive and aesthetically pleasing architecture

Utilise biodiversity and low-impact materials – we will work to preserve and enhance the setting of our buildings and the wider environment through the use of:

  • Locally sourced materials
  • Green sourced materials e.g. timber
  • Sustainable drainage
  • Recycled materials
  • Prefabrication

Reduce carbon footprint and waste – we do not believe it is possible to achieve zero-carbon buildings, but will ensure that they reduce energy consumption and waste. We can achieve this through careful use of:

  • Natural daylight and ventilation
  • Solar control
  • Insulation
  • Lighting controls
  • Heat recovery
  • Geo-thermal heat exchange
  • Combined heat and power generation
  • Wind power and rainwater harvesting
  • Waste segregation and recycling
  • Spoil retention
